Student Visa – Malta

Overview

The Malta Student National ‘D’ Visa is a long-stay visa for individuals enrolled in educational programmes in Malta that exceed 90 days. This visa allows non-EU citizens residing in the UK to live in Malta for the duration of their course.

Applicants must demonstrate confirmed enrolment, adequate financial means, and suitable accommodation, along with comprehensive travel and medical coverage. The visa is issued based on the level and duration of the intended study programme and is subject to approval by the Maltese Central Visa Unit.

Eligibility

To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Hold a valid passport not older than 10 years
  • Hold a valid UK residence permit (short-stay UK visas are not eligible)
  • Be officially enrolled in a study course in Malta
  • Apply for a stay exceeding 90 days (long-term educational purpose)

Processing Time

  • Applications must be submitted well in advance of the course start date
  • Minimum processing time is 4 to 6 weeks
  • Entry into Malta should be planned no more than two weeks prior to course commencement
  • Applications are subject to additional scrutiny and delays during peak periods

Documents Required

All documents must be submitted in English and dated within 30 days of the application. Original documents must be presented for verification, along with photocopies for submission.

Standard Requirements

Visa Application Form

  • Fully completed and signed

Passport

  • Valid for at least 3 months beyond the intended stay, or a minimum of 8 months
  • Full photocopy of the passport required

Photograph

  • One recent passport-sized photo as per ICAO standards

UK Residency

  • UK eVisa printout from UKVI with a valid share code

School Enrolment Letter

  • Course details (duration, weekly hours)
  • Proof of payment (receipt or invoice)

Proof of Finance

  • Latest 3 months’ UK bank statements with a bank certificate
  • If sponsored, also provide:
    • Sponsor’s 3-month bank statement
    • Signed sponsorship declaration
    • Copy of sponsor’s ID (front and back)

International Bank Card

  • Corresponding to the bank statement provided (front and back)

Travel Insurance

  • Minimum €30,000 coverage
  • Valid across the Schengen Area
  • Must cover:
    • MQF Level 5 and above: minimum 90 consecutive days from entry
    • MQF Level 4 and below: entire duration of stay
  • Purpose must state “study”

Flight Tickets

  • Complete itinerary with applicant’s name and travel details
  • Entry ticket must not be more than two weeks before course starts
  • If course duration is under 6 months, return ticket must be included

Proof of Accommodation

  • Accommodation for the first 14 nights from arrival in Malta
  • Must be in the applicant’s name
  • If provided by the school: official letter from school confirming details
  • If rented:
    • Signed lease agreement
    • Proof of residence (e.g. utility bill)
    • Rental declaration signed and stamped by a local notary/lawyer
    • Valid MTA licence, if applicable
  • Online accommodation bookings are accepted

For Minors (Below 18 Years)

  • Birth certificate (original and English translation)
  • Passport copies of both parents
  • Parental consent letter (original and English translation)

Photo Specifications

Please provide one recent colour photograph (not older than 6 months) that meets the following requirements:

Background

  • Taken against a light-coloured background (white or off-white)
  • Facial features must be clearly visible with contrast against the background

Quality & Composition

  • High resolution with the face in clear focus
  • Full face visible:
    • Neutral expression (non-smiling)
    • No sunglasses or tinted lenses
    • No hats, caps, or head coverings, unless worn for religious or ethnic reasons

Format

  • Printed on standard photographic paper (camera print only)
  • Photograph must be securely attached (glued) to the visa application form

Important
If the photograph does not meet the above specifications, the application will be deemed incomplete, and the applicant may be asked to retake the photo at the application centre.
