Cultural Visa – Malta

Overview

The Cultural Visa is intended for individuals travelling to Malta to participate in or organise cultural, artistic, or heritage-related activities. This includes participation in festivals, exhibitions, performances, academic exchanges in the field of culture, and similar long-term engagements. The visa allows for extended stay based on the nature and duration of the event or programme.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Cultural Visa, applicants must:

  • Be formally invited to Malta by a host institution or cultural organisation
  • Hold a valid passport with sufficient validity
  • Provide documentation confirming the purpose of visit and proof of involvement in the cultural activity
  • Demonstrate financial means and accommodation for the duration of the stay

Processing Time

  • Applications can be submitted up to 6 months before the intended travel date
  • Standard processing time is 3 to 4 weeks
  • Additional time may be required if further documents or interviews are requested
  • Early application is strongly recommended, especially during peak cultural seasons

Documents Required

All documents must be submitted in English and dated within 30 days of the application. Original documents must be presented for verification, along with photocopies for submission.

Standard Documentation

Visa Application Form

  • Fully completed and signed by the applicant

Passport

  • Minimum validity of 8 months
  • Issued within the last 10 years with at least two blank pages

Full Passport Copy

  • Including all used pages and previous visas

Photograph

  • One recent passport-size photo as per ICAO standards

Medical and Travel Insurance

  • Valid for the entire Schengen area
  • Minimum medical coverage of €30,000
  • Must include name, surname, and passport number
  • Proof that coverage is valid for non-residents

Proof of Finance

  • Bank statement for the last 3 months showing sufficient funds for stay

Proof of Travel

  • Confirmed flight itinerary showing the applicant’s name, date of travel, and destination

Cultural Visa-Specific Documentation

Invitation Letter

  • From the cultural host or institution in Malta
  • Must specify the event, applicant’s role, and dates of involvement

Proof of Accommodation

  • One of the following:
    • Declaration of Proof (for free accommodation), signed and stamped by a local lawyer or notary, with host’s ID and utility bill
    • Lease agreement signed by both parties, indicating name, address, rent, and stay duration
    • Hotel booking for a minimum of 14 consecutive nights from arrival date

Photo Specifications

Please provide one recent colour photograph (not older than 6 months) that meets the following requirements:

Background

  • Taken against a light-coloured background (white or off-white)
  • Facial features must be clearly visible with contrast against the background

Quality & Composition

  • High resolution with the face in clear focus
  • Full face visible:
    • Neutral expression (non-smiling)
    • No sunglasses or tinted lenses
    • No hats, caps, or head coverings, unless worn for religious or ethnic reasons

Format

  • Printed on standard photographic paper (camera print only)
  • Photograph must be securely attached (glued) to the visa application form

Important
If the photograph does not meet the above specifications, the application will be deemed incomplete, and the applicant may be asked to retake the photo at the application centre.
