The Scientific Researcher and Training Visa is designed for individuals who are invited to Malta to carry out academic or institutional research or to participate in structured training programmes. This visa is suitable for researchers, fellows, interns, and technical trainees working with recognised Maltese institutions or universities. It supports extended stays exceeding 90 days and facilitates international academic collaboration.

Eligibility

To apply for this visa, applicants must:

  • Hold a valid passport with at least 8 months of remaining validity
  • Be invited by a recognised Maltese host institution
  • Submit supporting documentation confirming their role in the research or training activity
  • Be able to demonstrate sufficient financial means and accommodation arrangements in Malta
  • Hold UK residency if applying from the UK

Processing Time

  • Visa applications may be submitted up to 6 months before the intended travel date
  • Standard processing time is 3–4 weeks, though delays may occur during high-volume periods
  • Applicants are advised to apply well in advance and ensure all documentation is complete to avoid processing delays

Documents Required

All documents must be submitted in English and dated within 30 days of the application. Original documents must be presented for verification, along with photocopies for submission.

Standard Documentation

Visa Application Form

  • Fully completed and signed

Passport

  • Minimum 8-month validity
  • Issued within the last 10 years
  • At least 2 blank pages

Photograph

  • One passport-sized photo according to ICAO standards

Full Passport Copy

  • Including all used pages and biometric data

Proof of Accommodation

  • If hosted:
    • Declaration of proof signed and stamped by a Maltese notary or lawyer
    • Copy of host’s ID and a recent utility bill
    • If hosted at a secondary address, this must be clearly stated
  • If renting:
    • Lease agreement signed by both parties
    • Must include applicant’s name, address, rent, and duration
  • If hotel:
    • Booking confirmation for a minimum of 14 consecutive nights

Proof of Travel

  • Full flight itinerary with applicant’s name, travel dates, and all stops
  • Preferred transit route outside the Schengen area

Scientific Researcher/Training-Specific Documents

Invitation Letter

  • Issued and signed by the host institution in Malta
  • Must outline the purpose, duration, and nature of the research or training programme

Medical and Travel Insurance

  • Valid for the Schengen Area
  • Minimum coverage of €30,000
  • Must include the applicant’s name, surname, and passport number
  • Insurance must remain valid regardless of the applicant’s country of residence

Photo Specifications

Please provide one recent colour photograph (not older than 6 months) that meets the following requirements:

Background

  • Taken against a light-coloured background (white or off-white)
  • Facial features must be clearly visible with contrast against the background

Quality & Composition

  • High resolution with the face in clear focus
  • Full face visible:
    • Neutral expression (non-smiling)
    • No sunglasses or tinted lenses
    • No hats, caps, or head coverings, unless worn for religious or ethnic reasons

Format

  • Printed on standard photographic paper (camera print only)
  • Photograph must be securely attached (glued) to the visa application form

Important
If the photograph does not meet the above specifications, the application will be deemed incomplete, and the applicant may be asked to retake the photo at the application centre.
