Overview

The Malta Adoption Visa allows non-EU nationals to enter Malta for the purpose of formalising or completing adoption procedures legally recognised by the Maltese authorities. This visa is applicable in cases where a child has been or will be adopted and the applicant needs to travel to Malta in connection with the adoption process, custody, or guardianship.

Eligibility

You may apply for a Malta Adoption Visa if:

  • You are a non-EU national involved in a legal adoption process connected to Malta.
  • You hold legal documentation proving adoption or custody rights.
  • You possess a valid passport with at least 8 months of remaining validity.
  • You hold a valid UK residence permit or immigration status.

Processing Time

  • Applications should be submitted at least 4–6 weeks in advance of your planned travel.
  • A minimum processing time of 3 weeks applies; however, this may vary based on individual circumstances or additional document requests.
  • Ensure all documents are complete and submitted in English to avoid delays.
  • Applications submitted via satellite locations (such as Manchester or Edinburgh) may require 2 additional working days.

Documents Required

All documents must be submitted in English and dated within 30 days of the application. Original documents must be presented for verification, along with photocopies for submission.

Standard Requirements 

Visa Application Form

  • Long-stay visa form, fully completed and signed.

Passport

  • Must be valid for at least 8 months and issued within the last 10 years.
  • Should contain at least 2 blank pages.

Full Passport Copy

  • Clear photocopies of all used pages of the current passport.

Photograph

  • One recent passport-sized photo following ICAO standards.

Travel Medical Insurance

  • Valid for the entire Schengen Area.
  • Minimum coverage of €30,000 for medical emergencies and repatriation.
  • Must clearly state the applicant’s name, surname, and passport number.
  • Must remain valid regardless of the applicant’s residence country.

Proof of Accommodation

  • Accommodation covering the first 14 nights in Malta.
  • If hosted by a local resident:
    • declaration of proof, signed and stamped by a Maltese lawyer or notary.
    • Host’s ID and recent utility bill as proof of residence.
  • If rented or booked online:
    • Valid lease agreement or booking confirmation with applicant’s name, address, and duration of stay.

Proof of Finance

  • UK bank statements for the last 3 months, showing sufficient funds to support the stay.
  • Statements must be dated within 30 days of visa application.
  • If applicable, include front and back copy of international bank card linked to the statement.

Proof of Travel

  • Confirmed flight itinerary showing the applicant’s name, flight details, and travel dates.
  • Entry date must correspond with the adoption or guardianship-related stay.

Adoption-Specific Documentation

Legal Adoption and Custody Papers

  • Certified legal documents confirming the adoption or custody status.
  • If not originally in English, they must be officially translated into English by an authorised translator.

Photo Specifications

Please provide one recent colour photograph (not older than 6 months) that meets the following requirements:

Background

  • Taken against a light-coloured background (white or off-white)
  • Facial features must be clearly visible with contrast against the background

Quality & Composition

  • High resolution with the face in clear focus
  • Full face visible:
    • Neutral expression (non-smiling)
    • No sunglasses or tinted lenses
    • No hats, caps, or head coverings, unless worn for religious or ethnic reasons

Format

  • Printed on standard photographic paper (camera print only)
  • Photograph must be securely attached (glued) to the visa application form

Important
If the photograph does not meet the above specifications, the application will be deemed incomplete, and the applicant may be asked to retake the photo at the application centre.
