EEA/EU Family Visa

Overview

This visa is for non-EU/EEA/Swiss nationals who are immediate family members of EEA, EU, or Swiss citizens residing in or travelling to Malta. Eligible applicants benefit from simplified documentation requirements and exemption from visa fees when accompanying their EEA/EU or Swiss family member to Malta.

Eligible family members include:

  • Spouse or registered partner
  • Parent(s)
  • Child(ren)

Please note, applicants must travel together with their EEA/EU or Swiss national family member. If travelling alone, the standard Tourist visa rules apply, including the full documentation and visa fee.

Eligibility

To apply under this category, you must:

  • Hold a valid passport or travel document
  • Hold a valid UK eVisa printout from UKVI with a valid share code
  • Travel together with your EEA/EU or Swiss national family member
  • Be an immediate family member as defined above 

Processing Time

  • Applications can be submitted up to 6 months before the intended travel date.
  • The minimum processing time is 3 weeks.
  • During peak periods (Easter, summer, and Christmas), processing times may be longer.
  • Applications submitted at satellite centres in Manchester or Edinburgh require 2 additional working days.
  • The consulate may request further documentation or invite the applicant for an interview, which may cause delays.

Documents Required

All documents must be recent (dated within 30 days) unless otherwise specified. Originals must be presented at the appointment, but only photocopies need to be submitted unless stated.

Standard Documentation

Visa Application Form

  • Complete and sign the official Schengen visa application form.

Passport

  • Original and photocopy of a passport issued within the last 10 years
  • Must have at least 2 blank pages and remain valid for at least 90 days beyond your return date

Previous Schengen Visas

  • If applicable, include photocopies of Schengen visas issued in the past 3 years

UK Residency

  • UK eVisa printout from UKVI with a valid share code
  • Must be valid for at least 1 month beyond your return from the Schengen Area

Photograph

  • One recent passport-size photo (not older than 6 months), meeting Schengen specifications

Supporting Documentation

EEA/EU or Swiss National’s ID

  • Passport or national identity card of your EEA/EU or Swiss family member (original and photocopy)

Proof of Relationship

  • Original and photocopy of a marriage or birth certificate
  • If not in English, a certified UK-based translation is required
  • Certificates issued outside the UK must be duly legalised

Proof of Joint Travel

  • Confirmed and fully paid return travel tickets showing both names
  • Travel details must match passport names, include travel dates, reservation codes, and e-ticket numbers
  • For holiday packages, proof that at least 75% of the cost has been paid
  • If travelling by car, include car registration, insurance, return tickets (ferry or Eurotunnel), and driver’s licence
  • If not driving, a signed cover letter from the driver confirming joint travel and travel dates

Proof of Travel Between Schengen Countries

  • Evidence of all travel arrangements if visiting multiple Schengen countries

Photo Specifications

Please provide one recent colour photograph (not older than 6 months) that meets the following requirements:

Background

  • Taken against a light-coloured background (white or off-white)
  • Facial features must be clearly visible with contrast against the background

Quality & Composition

  • High resolution with the face in clear focus
  • Full face visible:
    • Neutral expression (non-smiling)
    • No sunglasses or tinted lenses
    • No hats, caps, or head coverings, unless worn for religious or ethnic reasons

Format

  • Printed on standard photographic paper (camera print only)
  • Photograph must be securely attached (glued) to the visa application form

Important
If the photograph does not meet the above specifications, the application will be deemed incomplete, and the applicant may be asked to retake the photo at the application centre.
